Maharaja Nandakumar established Guhyakali on the banks of the Brahmani river south of the village in 1772 AD on the day of Ratanti Chaturdashi. It is heard that this goddess was also worshipped by Jarasandha, the famous character of Mahabharata.
However, the peculiarity of this Kali idol is that its structure is completely different from the other ordinary Kali idol. I have written that before. A black stone altar with four serpent hoods in its four corners. Mother Kali is sitting on a coiled snake. Her right foot rested on the snake's head. She is rightly 'Sarpa bhushan bhusita'. She wears a snake around her waist. The two-armed mother is adorned with a snake in her hand, which is also adorned with snakes. The crown that the mother wears on her head is decorated with rows of snake hoods. Her necklace is made by separated human head. Mother Kali's two ears are such that male child is coming out from it . Mother's two hands are in a special position. She is at the same time awesome but continues to greet the devotees. This goddess has a strange attractive power. Probably this idol of mother Kali is nowhere else in the world. The Brahmani river flows a little distance from the temple . But that stream is no more. But the ancient banyan tree near the river is worth seeing.
How to get there:
From Howrah Station ( Kolkata city , India ) or Sealdah station ( Kolkata city , India ) to Rampurhat or Nalhati by train. It is convenient to rent a car from Rampurhat or Nalhati. If you have to go by bus, you have to take National Highway No. 60 and get off at Nagora junction. From there some arrangement can be found to go to the temple. The distance from Rampurhat to Akalipur is 40 km.
Where to stay:
There is no arrangement in village Akalipur for overnight accommodation. It is better to come back and spend the night in Nalhati or Rampurhat.
