It’s teacher appreciation week, and you know who I appreciate? I appreciate the teachers who gave me detention when I deserved it.

I appreciate teachers who teach subject matter, but also teacher their students skills that they will need throughout their lives.

I appreciate teachers who make their students ask questions, and criticize, and wonder.

I appreciate the group of teachers I talked to last week who go door to door at the beginning of the school year to students’ houses delivering school supplies and hand written welcome notes to kids without doors on their homes.

I appreciate that math teacher in high school who wasn’t even my teacher who stayed after school every day to help me pass a class.

I appreciate those teachers who are coaches who are teaching kids to win and lose gracefully, and commit even more time to their students beyond the school day.

I appreciate my son’s teachers.

I appreciate the ones who are pushing boundaries and are not satisfied with teaching the way it’s “always been done.”

I appreciate the teachers who teach their students to fall in love with books, and refuse to let testing steal the joy of reading from their kids.

I appreciate those teachers who believe every one of their students has the potential to achieve greatness.

I appreciate the teacher who helped me get through my parent’s divorce in middle school.

I appreciate those teachers who are funny and believe laughter is one of the best ways to engage students.

I appreciate those teachers who are dedicated to inspiring and encouraging other teachers.

I appreciate the teachers who do not let politicians or the media define who they are and what they do.

I appreciate teachers who are less interested in politics, and more interested in teaching students how to think critically and to use their voices and actions to make society a better place.

I appreciate the teachers who find a way to make Shakespeare and the Pythagorean Theorem engaging for students.

I appreciate the teachers who work side-jobs to make ends meet so they can keep working in the classroom.

I don’t appreciate the system that requires far too many teachers to do that.

I appreciate teachers who show students how to balance a checkbook, how to shake hands, write a proper email, show respect to others, dress up for a job interview, be a grownup.

I appreciate teachers who aren’t afraid to be a kid as well.

I appreciate teachers who help get kids ready for college, or tech school, or apprenticeships, or career, or whatever their students need.

I appreciate teachers who hold their bladders all day for the sake of teaching elementary.

I appreciate teachers who stand up for other teachers.

I appreciate teachers who help their students to love working hard, love caring for others, love creating and thinking, love reading, writing, computing, collaborating, hustling, drawing, serving, experimenting, to love learning.

I appreciate teachers.
