The feral hog population in Texas has surged, with an estimated 2.6 million wild hogs wreaking havoc across the state.

In Beaumont, residents are on edge as wild hogs have been spotted roaming residential areas, causing damage and raising safety concerns. Kerry Thomas, a resident, expressed his alarm after discovering hogs in his backyard for the first time in six years. "I've been here at this address for about six years now, and it's my first time seeing hogs," Thomas said. Neighbors captured footage of about seven hogs near Tram Road and Major Drive.

Thomas is worried about the potential for further damage and the safety of his family. "They really tear up your property, especially your grass, and they will attack you," he said. Thomas recalled a violent hog attack in November 2019, when 59-year-old Christine Rollins was killed near Anahuac.

Although the hogs have not been seen since Friday evening, Thomas is taking precautions to protect his family by putting up a fence to keep the hogs out. "We like the view of the woods and stuff, but now we got to block that view in just to protect my family," he said.

Experts advise treating wild hogs like bears and not approaching them. Residents within city limits are urged to contact Beaumont Animal Control if they encounter a wild hog.
