Where did the Habsburg family come from? The Life of Rudolf I - Animated History

The von Habsburg family dominated European politics for almost 800 years. But where did they come from? Who was the first Habsburg to really gain relevance? In this video, we will explore the history of the prestigious Habsburg family - from their humble origins as counts in Switzerland, to the life of Rudolf I., who became the first Holy Roman Emperor from the family line.

Starting at the first confirmed Habsburg, Lanzelin/Kanzelin, over his son Radbot and Rudolf, we go to Werner "The Pious" and the abbey of Muri/Muri Cloister. We discuss the political intrigue that cloister was involved in and move on to Albrecht IV and Rudolf II Habsburg, before finally arriving at the life of Rudolf I. After explaining the history leading up to the great interregnum, we go over the election of 1272, and the primary candidates of Rudolf and Ottokar I. Premyslid. After discussing the wars that Rudolf and Ottokar fought over power in the empire, we cover the later years of Rudolf's reign before closing out.
