Board Certified Dermatologist Timothy M. Jochen, M.D. of Contour Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center discusses treatment options for for actinic keratoses which are pre-cancerous skin lesions. An actinic keratosis (AK) is a thick patch of scaly or crusty skin that is usually the result of sun damage. Actinic keratoses need to be seen by a dermatologist because they can turn into Squamous Cell Carcinoma, metastisize and be fatal. Untreated lesions have a 20% risk of developing Squamous Cell Carcinoma. Dr. Jochen notes that actinic keratoses are more common in fair skinned people. In this interview, he highlights blue light photodynamic therapy with Levulan as a treatment option.
