One significant event on the arrival of the Magellan - Elcano expedition is the first documented and confirmed celebration of mass in the country. According to the accounts of Antonio Pigafetta the First Mass was held on an island called “Mazaua”. Significantly the first mass was held during the Easter of that year.

Two sites are claiming the place for the first Easter mass - Butuan and Limasawa Island but we will focus first on the claim of Butuan.
