STORYLINE:

Malaysians got a rare glimpse of jailed politician Anwar Ibrahim on Wednesday when he was allowed out of prison to attend his mother's funeral.

To the sound of more than one-thousand supporters cheering, Anwar visited his home as part of the traditional funeral ceremony.

His visit to his home was conducted under a heavily armed escort of police and prison warders.

It was his first trip home since he was jailed nearly three years ago after falling out with his one-time mentor, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, and being arrested.

Crowds attending the funeral had earlier been warned by police authorities not to shout political slogans or attempt to touch Anwar or he would be immediately returned to the hospital where he is being treated while serving a 15-year jail term.

Doctors have been giving Anwar treatment for a slipped disc, which Anwar alleges was in part caused by a beating he received in jail.

After appeals from his family and lawyers, authorities allowed Anwar to take part in traditional Muslim funeral ceremonies for Che Yan Hamid Hussain, 76, who died Tuesday from a heart attack.

Anwar led Muslim prayers over his mother's body before it was taken to a mosque for last rites then buried at
a cemetery.

Anwar wept and waved to the crowd at his house before being driven to the cemetery, where scores of police and prison officers some armed with automatic weapons were waiting.

Anwar was once a popular protege of Mahathir, who has ruled Malaysia since 1981.

But he was fired in September 1998 amid differences over handling the Asian economic crisis.

The split triggered the largest street demonstrations in Malaysia in decades.

Anwar was later tried and convicted of corruption and sodomy.

He claims the charges were concocted to crush his challenge to Mahathir.
