The Historical Museum of the Canton of Graubünden (Sept. 2020)

In the middle of the picturesque old town of Chur, the Rätisches Museum presents the history of Graubünden from its beginnings to the present day. A permanent exhibition on four floors and changing special exhibitions invite you on a journey through the centuries.

The Rhaetian Museum is housed in a baroque patrician house with an impressive cross gable. It was built in 1675 as a private residence by a member of the ruling class within the Three Leagues, Baron Paul von Buol zu Strassberg and Rietberg (1634–1697). The building itself tells a piece of Graubünden's history with its wide staircases, cellar vaults, a carriage walk, two stately floors, a servant's room and an attic.

At the end of the 19th century, the jurist, historian and politician Peter Conradin von Planta-Zuoz (1815–1902) founded a “Bündnerische Stiftung für Wissenschaft und Kunst” with the aim of establishing a museum. In doing so, he wanted to counteract the continuous migration of valuable cultural heritage from Graubünden. On 8 June 1872, the Rätisches Museum opened its first exhibition on the ground floor of the Buolhaus.
