Backbone pain after delivery, also called as postpartum back pain, is a very common condition experienced by many new mothers. This discomfort can range from mild soreness to severe pain that affects daily activities. The cause behind this pain are multiple, involving physical, hormonal, and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy and childbirth.
1. Hormonal Changes
During pregnancy, the body produces a hormone called relaxin. This hormone helps loosen the ligaments and joints of the pelvis to prepare the body for childbirth. However, it also affects other joints and ligaments in the spine, making them weaker and less stable. After delivery, it takes many weeks or months for the hormone levels to return to normal, which means the joints and ligaments remain loose and can cause back pain.
2. Muscle Strain and Weakness
During pregnancy, the abdominal muscles stretch to accommodate the growing baby. This stretching weakens the core muscles that support the spine. As a result, after delivery, the back muscles have to work harder to support the body, leading to muscle fatigue and pain. Additionally, during labor, women may use different body positions and muscle efforts that strain the lower back, further contributing to discomfort.
3. Poor Posture
After delivery, many mothers spend long hours breastfeeding or bottle-feeding their babies, often in a hunched-over position. Repeatedly bending, lifting, or sitting in awkward positions can put extra pressure on the spine and back muscles. Improper posture while lifting the baby or household items also strains the lower back and contributes to pain.
4. Weight Gain and Body Changes
Most women gain extra weight during pregnancy. The added body weight, especially around the abdomen, shifts the body’s center of gravity and places stress on the spine. Even after delivery, if the extra weight remains, it can continue to affect posture and increase the load on the back muscles, causing persistent pain.
5. Epidural Anesthesia
Some women who receive an epidural injection during labor may experience back pain afterward. Though the procedure itself is generally safe, soreness or mild pain can occur at the injection site. In rare cases, if the needle causes irritation or inflammation, the discomfort may last longer, though it usually improves with rest and gentle care.
6. Lack of Rest and Physical Fatigue
Caring for a newborn often means sleepless nights, irregular meals, and little rest. This exhaustion weakens the body’s natural ability to heal and recover from the physical strain of childbirth. Constant bending, carrying the baby, and doing household chores without enough rest can worsen back pain.
7. Nutritional Deficiencies
A lack of essential nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium can weaken bones and muscles, increasing the risk of back pain. Since mothers lose a significant amount of nutrients during pregnancy and breastfeeding, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and take supplements as recommended by the doctor.
8. Emotional Stress
Emotional stress and postpartum depression can also contribute to back pain.
