The letter Dhaad (ض) is a unique and emphatic letter in the Arabic alphabet, known for its heavy, deep sound produced by the side of the tongue touching the molars. It is one of the heaviest letters in tajweed and always pronounced with tafkheem (heaviness). Dhaad is especially important in Quranic tajweed because it helps preserve the distinct pronunciation and meaning of words, preventing confusion with similar letters.

Tajweed Rules for Letter Dhaad (ض)
Dhaad is an emphatic letter, always pronounced heavily (tafkheem) regardless of the surrounding vowels or letters.
It is articulated from the side of the tongue pressing against the upper molars, producing a thick, deep sound unique to Arabic.
Dhaad never has qalqalah (a bouncing sound) because it is a soft, continuous letter (rikhwah).
When Dhaad is followed by an Alif (ا) with a fatha, the heaviness intensifies, making it sound fuller and more resonant.
Dhaad is distinct from the letter Daal (د) and should not be confused, as mixing these changes meanings of the Quranic words drastically.
