Howell - Jolly bodies

Howell - Jolly bodies are small , round, regular, bluish - red colour bodies composed of DNA , about 1 micrometer in diameter
usually single & in the periphery of a red cell. They are readily visible on the wright/Giemsa stained smear
The spleen is responsible for the removel of nuclear material in the RBCs, so in absence of a functional spleen,nuclear material is removed ineffectively

Howell-Jolly bodies are seen in
-Post splenectomy
-Functional asplenia
-Anatomical absence of spleen
-Megaloblastic anemia

Pappenheimer bodies

-These are iron containing granules in red blood cells that are seen because the iron is aggregated with mitochondria & ribosomes
-They appear as small dark blue bodies of uniform size/faint violet or magenta, often in small clusters,due to staining of the associated protein

Basophilic stippling

Appearance - fine or coarse granules stain bluish, distributes evenly over entire cell
Interpretation - formed during drying of smear , aggregates of ribosomes and polyribosomes
Found in - Thalassemia, megaloblastic anemia, Hemolytic anemia,
Heavy metal poisoning(Lead/arsenic)

Heinz bodies

Represent denatured or precipitated hemoglobin within a cell.
with a supravital stain like crystal violet, Heinz bodies appear as round blue precipitates attached to inner surface of red cell membrane. Not stain by Romanowsky stain

Postsplenectomy
oxident stress of drugs & chemicals
G6PD deficiency

Cabot rings

Appearance - reddish, ringlike loops, circles or figure eights
These are remnants of the nuclear membrane or a part of the mitotic spindle, remnants of microtubules.
Finding in patient with,
Megaloblestic anemia
Severe anemia
Lead poisoning
