The global metals industry, the foundation of modern civilization, is under serious threat due to metals scarcity, increasing demand and greenhouse gas emission. There are currently no concrete commonly accepted long term solutions or implementation plans for these problems. In our recent paper in Nature (DebRoy, Palmer, Elmer and Mukherjee, 2025, vol. 246, p. 547) entitled “How to tackle metals’ scarcity, rising demand, and climate impact”, we propose five strategies that together can address these challenges. The solutions that socities choose will have wide ranging consequesces for our ways of life, economy and the well being of our planel and future generations. We have described the course of action to revitalize the metals industry, safeguard the environment and support a sustainable society.
