Brandon Thomas Crowley, an African American pastor and scholar, has emerged as a leading voice in advocating for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals within Christian communities. As the Senior Pastor of the Historic Myrtle Baptist Church in Newton, Massachusetts, Crowley has dedicated his ministry to challenging traditional norms and promoting a theology that embraces both queer identity and Christian faith.

In 2015, Crowley publicly came out as gay, a decision that marked a significant turning point in his ministry. While some congregation members departed, many others, including new LGBTQ+ members, joined the church, drawn by its message of inclusivity. This experience reinforced Crowley's belief that one's sexual orientation and Christian faith are not mutually exclusive.

Crowley's academic work further explores this intersection. In his book, Queering Black Churches: Dismantling Heteronormativity in African American Congregations, he examines how Black churches can move beyond traditional heteronormative frameworks to become more welcoming spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals. He introduces the concept of "Black ecclesial queering," a methodology that centers the experiences of Black queer individuals to subvert puritanical ideologies within church structures.


Through his scholarship and ministry, Crowley advocates for a reinterpretation of biblical texts, emphasizing themes of love, justice, and inclusion. He challenges the notion that the Bible inherently condemns queer identities, instead proposing that a faithful reading of scripture supports the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ individuals in the Christian community.

Crowley's work serves as a guide for churches seeking to become open and affirming, offering both theological insights and practical steps toward inclusivity. His message resonates with many who have felt marginalized by traditional religious teachings, affirming that it is indeed possible to be both queer and Christian.
