The Plaza (or Piazza) of Holy Angels Mausoleum completed in late 2021 is the fifth stage of the Holy Angels Mausoleum complex development at Fawkner Memorial Park. Harmer Architecture have designed the previous four stages since the first stage, was built in 1997. The mausolea cater for the continuing demand for this type of burial by the Italian community of Melbourne.

The mausoleum includes a new public space, the Plaza that gives an address to both the Harmer designed Atrium Mausoleum of 2017 and the new Plaza Mausoleum and links the two together. The Plaza is a landscaped open space for large gatherings, the focus of which is a bronze statue of the Holy Mother Mary crafted by Melbourne sculptor Darien Pullen.

We worked with the built environment team of GMCT who are adding and improving public spaces throughout the cemeteries that they manage.

The Mausoleum provides 1812 casket spaces arranged six high over a series of galleries, each distinguished by a unique stone colour so that people who buy a burial place have a wide choice of options. The galleries are oriented east west to provide a direct connection to the forecourt (or plaza) and framed views of landscaping in both directions.

A casket space is a reinforced concrete vault or crypt that contains the body of a person in a coffin or casket.

The longer galleries include natural light from above using clerestory windows under which are suspended coloured glass panels designed by the practice in collaboration with glass artist Andrew Ferguson.

The central theme of the design for the mausoleum galleries is the role of Women in nurturing and caring for others as exemplified by the Holy Mother and also 18 female saints who throughout history who have dedicated their lives to serving the poor, the sick and those who suffered. Each row of crypts is named after one of these women.

The mausoleum features custom made folded stainless steel cladding to complement the adjacent fourth stage Atrium of Holy Angels mausoleum completed by Harmer Architecture in 2017.

Materials such as autumn blend special profile bricks by Krause Bricks, timber ceilings and coloured glass panels suspended within skylight shafts, along with custom designed seating and landscaping, makes the mausoleum an inspiring and comforting place to visit. Each crypt is provided with a custom made vigil lamp with flower vase designed by the practice and manufactured in Melbourne.

Sustainability features include solar panels that provide power for public lighting and vigil lamps to both the Atrium and Plaza mausoleums, as well as rainwater collection and storage of 90,000 litre capacity for irrigation of landscaped areas.

Mausoleums are active public spaces and continue to serve people who visit their relatives on a regular basis and gather together, often in large numbers, for interment ceremonies.
