The Narration of African Feminism is a groundbreaking art exhibition hosted by Fobally Art Gallery, dedicated to amplifying the voices of African women and celebrating their pivotal roles in the continent's development. This exhibition not only highlights the struggles, triumphs, and aspirations of African women but also delves into how feminism has evolved across time, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and artistic talents of African women.

The exhibition, which is the first of its kind, kicks off on August 16 and runs daily until August 31, 2024, at the gallery’s grounds in Lekki, Lagos. It features 40 artworks that exclusively celebrate women’s exploits, talents, and creativity, providing a vivid portrayal of the journey of African women from traditional roles to modern-day influences.

Fobally Art Gallery's chairman, Larry Segun-Lean, emphasizes that Africa has many great women who have played key roles across various sectors, yet their contributions are often overlooked. Figures like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Miriam Makeba, Queen Amina of Zaria, and Queen Yaa Asantewaa of Ghana, among others, have changed the course of history. These women, and many others, deserve to be celebrated for their historical and ongoing impact.

The exhibition also addresses the broader social issues tied to gender equality and the often-hidden contributions of women. By showcasing these powerful narratives, The Narration of African Feminism seeks to chronicle the journey of African women, emphasizing the importance of feminism in upholding their contributions and influence. This series will continue with future editions, further exploring the historical antecedents of African feminism and offering artworks that celebrate the achievements of women through the ages.

As Creative Director Folashade Abiola notes, women are the hidden pillars that often carry the world. This exhibition is a tribute to those women, showcasing their achievements for posterity’s sake and shining a light on the work they do behind the scenes.

The Narration of African Feminism is not just an art exhibition; it is a powerful statement and celebration of the strength, creativity, and enduring influence of African women.
