India: Heavy Rains Hit Hyderabad City, Schools & Colleges Shut in Telangana State

Heavy rains continue to lash the South Indian states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for several districts in Telangana, as the downpour is expected to continue over the next two days. State authorities have also deployed National Disaster Response Teams in Hyderabad, the capital city of Telangana. Schools and colleges have been asked to remain closed on September 2 due to the expected severe downpour. Meanwhile, the situation is worsening in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh state as well, where at least eight people have died due to massive flooding and landslides. So far, at least 80 people have been rescued from flood-affected areas. The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, has declared an ex-gratia payment of rupees 500,000 ($5,956) for the families of the deceased.
