Whether you are dreaming big for the coming season or feeling called to grow something new, this show is your invitation to slow down, listen closely, and grow with intention.
In this episode, Nicole is joined by Jennifer Gulizia of The Flowering Farmhouse in Hood River, Oregon. Jennifer is a photographer, mom, and sustainable cut-flower farmer who teaches others to grow in harmony with the land. She operates a dahlia CSA while restoring her newly acquired acreage, now home to a native restoration prairie, 3 acres of native trees and shrubs, a Jane Goodall “Seeds of Hope” garden, and thousands of beautiful annual and perennial flowers. Together, Nicole and Jennifer discuss the challenges and successes of starting over in the garden, their personal journeys as cut-flower farmers, and how they’re finding signs of hope in newly germinated seedlings.
Jennifer shares the moment she realized she could transform the flowers she already grew in her backyard into the foundation of a successful business. She talks about the serendipitous course of events that led her from a small home on a quarter acre to her own studio space and over 20 acres of new land, complete with compacted soil, fields of knapweed, and mischievous coyotes.
Nicole and Jennifer share their favorite and most challenging cut flowers, the struggles of transforming fallow land into an abundant garden, and how they run thriving businesses while being present for their kids. Jennifer reflects on the life lessons of growing flowers and what makes her work so meaningful, inspiring her to share her expertise through in-person and online education offerings. Check out the upcoming Profitable Dahlia Summit for two days of invaluable insights from 11 of the top high-profit dahlia growers in the country. Meet Nicole and Jennifer in person at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show, coming up in Seattle February 18-22, where Jennifer will present a session on regenerative cut flower gardening.
If you love flowers, need encouragement and advice for starting over on your piece of land, or dream of turning your garden into a flourishing business, this episode will inspire you to start germinating your own plans for a sunny future.
