Record-breaking fireworks and laser shows lit up the night skies across the UAE to welcome the New Year. Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai became the showstopper, as the world’s tallest tower shone brightly in a dazzling array of colours and lights on the stroke of midnight. Hundreds of thousands braved the traffic to claim the best spot in Downtown at Dubai Mall as early as 4pm as vantage points for The Fountain and Burj Khalifa turned into a sea of people wearing glitter and glam for the occasion.

Since 2010, the Emaar NYE celebrations have become among the most iconic in the world. Watched by an estimated audience of 1 billion worldwide, the display, which takes place in Downtown Dubai on 31 December, is a unique initiative by Emaar, the global property developer, reflecting the dynamism, creativity, and openness of the city. 

In a sweeping expanse across the entire 500-acre Downtown Dubai neighborhood, the show expands in a spectacular visual display of pyrotechnics precisely choreographed to a content and light show and an eclectic soundtrack. The show brings artistic interpretations to life through Burj Khalifa’s massive LED façade, synched to The Dubai Fountain. The celebrations are televised nationally and globally. They can also be watched here on this page through live streaming starting at 8 pm.

The celebrations area is kept safe with valuable support from the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism, Roads & Transport Authority, Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defence and Dubai Health Authority, among other governmental entities, as hundreds of thousands of people descend on Downtown Dubai to witness the event. Accessing Downtown Dubai is on a first-come, first-served basis and only. Those who have hotel or restaurant reservations will be provided a physical badge to enter. Designed to be enjoyed by the whole world, the Emaar NYE is a globally unifying event that is as joyful as it is epic in proportions, in the true spirit of Dubai. ■ BURJ KHALIFA:
It's a skyscraper in Dubai, UAE with a total height of 829.8m. It has been the tallest structure and building in the world since its topping out of Taipei 101 at 508.2m height in 2009, the previous holder of that status. Construction began in Jan 2004, with the exterior of the structure completed on Oct 1, 2009. The building officially opened on Jan 4, 2010. Burj Khalifa set several world records, including:
