Sugar used in processed foods is likely to contain bone char refined sugar.
In Japan, roughly 50% of white sugar is refined with bone char, and it is almost impossible to trace back to the source, since even sugar from the same company may be processed in different ways in different factories.
So as long as you eat accidentally vegan friendly processed foods in Japan, it is almost impossible to avoid it.
