The Pearl Reference. Hands down, it’s one of our favorite kits we’ve ever played on this channel. A few weeks ago, we demoed an older Pearl Session Series kit, and we were impressed. But the Reference really blew us away. Enjoy this demo, performed by Jon Ziegler!

So what’s the big idea behind the Reference? What makes it stand out, and why should you care? Here’s the thing: Each Reference tom, snare, and bass drum is individually tailored with its own shell, hardware, and edge “Recipe” to best capture its intended voice.

It starts with the wood: North American Maple, Birch, and African Mahogany. “Each size and type of drum then receives its own ply make-up, specified thickness, and bearing edge. This creates smaller toms with more cut. larger toms with more body, bass drums with added bottom-end, and snare drums with increased, focused power.”

Our kit is a 12x8 Rack Tom, a 14x14 Floor Tom, and 16x16 Floor Tom, and an 18x14 Bass Drum.

Shell: 6-Ply (7.5mm) Maple
Edge: Rounded 45°
Sound: Warm, punchy mid-note

14” Floor Tom
Shell: 8-Ply (10mm) Maple (4) Mahogany (4)
Edge: Fully-Rounded
Sound: Controlled low-end warmth

16” Floor Tom
Shell: 8-Ply (10mm) Maple (2) Mahogany (6)
Edge: Fully-Rounded
Sound: Controlled bottom-range power

18” Bass Drum
Shell: 6-Ply (7.5mm) Maple (2) Mahogany (4)
Edge: Fully-Rounded
Sound: Quick, Punchy, Powerful Low-End

Snare: Pearl Masters Studio (Birch) 6.5x14, Wine Red
