In the final weeks of his 72-year reign, the long-lived and "immortal" Sun King, Louis XIV, faced a dramatic decline. His last illness, gangrene in his leg, began in August 1715. Despite his doctors' incompetence and his failing health, he maintained the public rituals of his court and continued to perform his duties as king. His death on September 1, 1715, was a highly theatrical event, witnessed by his court as the final act of his life. After his passing, his will was swiftly overturned, and the funeral was an elaborate public affair, a final piece of royal pageantry that also served to announce the accession of his 5-year-old great-grandson, Louis XV, as the new king. The ceremony, which ended on October 23 with his burial at the royal necropolis in Saint-Denis, marked a transition from the old regime to the new.
