That's why we're helping hard working families make ends meet while connecting them with the education, financial tools, and job training opportunities to empower them to create a better, more sustainable future for themselves and their loved ones.
We know that when families are financially secure, everything else, health, education, opportunity, becomes a little easier.
That’s why we offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, or VITA. Every year, our IRS-certified volunteers help thousands of local families prepare and file their taxes for free. This isn’t just about saving on preparation fees, it’s about making sure families claim the refunds and credits they’ve earned. Last year, VITA filers received nearly 2.5 million dollars in Federal and State refunds and tax credits. Those dollars stay right here in Monterey County, helping families pay for essentials like rent, groceries, and childcare.
We also partner with CalWORKs to provide financial education and coaching for families who are working toward self-sufficiency. Through workshops and one-on-one guidance, we help parents build budgeting skills, improve credit, and plan for the future—skills that create real, lasting change.
Financial Literacy Education at United Way empowers people to take charge of their financial future. From one-time workshops that introduce budgeting and savings strategies to multi-week series that guide participants step by step, the program meets people where they are. In the past year, more than 640 residents built new financial skills and confidence, creating a ripple effect for their families and neighborhoods. It’s transformation you can see, one participant at a time and across our whole community.
Launched in 2023, the Housing Stability program helped Monterey County families facing housing instability maintain or secure safe, stable housing. It offers targeted support such as financial assistance for deposits and move-in costs, housing navigation, case management, landlord-tenant mediation, and connection to public benefits and resources—all designed to promote long-term housing and financial stability. We were able to scale these resources through partnerships with Community Human Services, the City of Salinas, the Hartnell College Foundation, the City of Greenfield, the Monterey County Office of Education, Goodwill Central Coast and Gathering for Women with an investment of over $1.5M assisting over 2,000 households.
