"During the Great Depression, President Roosevelt famously put Americans to work
repairing the damage caused by their expansion westward, calling the program the Civilian
Conservation Corps (CCC) or “Roosevelt’s Tree Army” (1933). Today we can still see evidence
of their interventions in the Tucson area. Earth berms were put in place there in the ’30s and then abandoned. They serve as a powerful example of what earthworks and manpower alone
can accomplish. The area is thickly vegetated, a stark contrast to the sparse desert
surrounding it. Berms can be used on a large scale to mitigate drought, to adapt agricultural
lands in a time of changing climate, and to stop the erosion of topsoils."
