Some of you of a certain vintage might remember an Australian folk group by the name of The Seekers - anyone remember The Carnival Is Over? The Seekers did a UK tour in 2014, and I went to see them THREE times. Yes, I still AM a fan! Back in the 1990s their manager John Kovac discovered this magical Scots Gaelic tune, and so he and The Seekers wrote a set of words which they called The Shores of Avalon. Kirsty Morris and I added an extra verse. The Isle of Avalon is, of course, the old name for Glastonbury, which in Celtic times was built on an island surrounded by water, and the song draws on the legend of King Arthur being rowed to his last peaceful resting place on the island. For me this is definitely one of the loveliest passing songs about that mysterious crossing from one plane of existence into another, which is why it's a favourite choice for ceremonies of remembrance.
