Where do we find the everlasting happiness that we all seek? Within or outside? Often the search for it is in external objects and beings. The Upanishads inform that the happiness we seek is neither inside nor outside. It is our inherent nature, our own Self. In earlier episodes, Sat (Existence) and Chit (Consciousness) svarupa of Atman is discussed. In this episode, Ananda (Bliss) svarupa of Atman is communicated.

A king, who is in search of happiness, is told that he could gain happiness if he wears the shirt of a happy person. Despite all efforts, they are unable find a single person in his kingdom who claimed to be happy. After a lot of searching, the king’s soldiers find a poor man who is happy. The poor man explains to the king the secret to his happiness.

In the story, a king is unhappy despite having all the wealth, luxury, and entertainment in his kingdom. He sends his ministers to find a truly happy person whose shirt he could wear to gain happiness, based on a sage's advice. However, no one they encounter is genuinely happy, as everyone is burdened by desires, ambitions, and fears.

Eventually, they find a simple cart driver who is truly happy, but ironically, he doesn't own a shirt. His happiness stems from contentment and a lack of attachment to material possessions. He teaches the king that true happiness cannot be found in external things, but in inner peace and satisfaction.

Key Insights:
Happiness is not materialistic: Possessions, fame, and power do not guarantee happiness. People may have everything but still be discontent due to their desires and fears.

Contentment is the key: The cart driver, despite lacking wealth, is content with his life and thus truly happy. This highlights that contentment with what one has leads to inner peace.

Desires lead to suffering: The more people desire, the more they suffer. The story illustrates that those who are constantly striving for more cannot find lasting happiness.

Happiness is internal: True happiness is a state of mind that comes from within, not from external circumstances.

Moral:
True happiness cannot be attained through material wealth or possessions. It comes from inner contentment, peace, and freedom from desires. Happiness is a state of mind that does not depend on external factors but on how we perceive and accept life.
