In this guitar song lesson, I will take you through all the chord progressions and strumming patterns for The Beatles classic, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, written by George Harrison from their 1968 album 'The Beatles' (more commonly known as the White Album).

There are two main chord progressions here and I will show you how to play each one, firstly strumming along to the beat.

I love the first progression as it cleverly uses some slash chords as the bass note walks down from an A to an F. The progression starts on an Am chord and then we add a G underneath it to play an Am/G ("A minor slash G" or "A minor over G"). The third chord could be named Am/F#, but if we consider F# the root note we would name it F#m7b5 ("F sharp minor seven flat 5"). The bass walk down concludes on a barre F chord.

The second half of the first progression has a different ending on the repeat. First time we have Am-G-D-E, on the repeat we do Am-G-C-E.

The E chord acting as a V chord moves perfectly into the A major chord of the second chord progression, which has modulated to the key of A major. There are lots of barre chords here to keep your fretting hand busy. We have a I-iii-vi-iii-ii-ii-V-V progression (A-C#m-F#m-C#m-Bm-Bm-E-E). The progression is played twice and the E major works perfectly again to bring us back round to the Am of the first progression (a V-i harmonic minor cadence).

There is a great guitar solo provided by Eric Clapton and some great fills throughout the song. If the interest is there I'll look to do a video on the guitar solo and some of the other electric guitar parts.
