With so many things to focus on as an athlete, it's easy to overlook your breathing. Drew Walsh, a corrective exercise and performance enhancement specialist, says developing poor breathing mechanics can lead to joint dysfunction, poor recovery and muscle imbalances.

However, there are certain breathing techniques you can practice to help improve your performance. One method is by learning diaphragmatic breathing, which is a deep-breathing technique that involves inhaling through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.

When practicing diaphragmatic breathing, Walsh says to visualize the air entering through your nose and into your stomach.

"The athlete wants to feel their stomach expanding," he adds.
