Originally uploaded by US National Archives at sound speed, in a 'one light' copy of variable contrast/brightness, and with 'flash titles' of only a couple of frames before each sequence, the significance of this one-hour film could be easily overlooked. I felt obliged to manipulate this in a Sony Vegas editor to optimise the existing video, rendering the subject matter and industrial processes fully understandable. It is easily the most detailed and comprehensive surviving film documentary on the manufacture of aeroplanes surviving from the late WW1 period, tracing the whole process from felling the initial spruce tree, to the dispatch of completed aircraft. Most of the footage is devoted to the construction of the Dayton-Wright Company's 'DH-4' in factories based in Dayton, Ohio - the only U.S.-built military airplane that actually reached Europe before the end of the war. In those early days, aeroplane manufacture was essentially a complex exercise in precision woodworking. I have taken optimised freeze frames on each film title and have re-inserted these for appropriate lengths of screen time to make them readable, have tried to optimise contrast and brightness on each shot, and slowed the 'projection speed' on this video copy to an effective 16 pictures per second, the speed at which the movement appears to be most natural.
