Overview of Project Blast Off

Faced with shifting service-delivery demands, distributed teams, and the need for modern collaboration tools, the City of Cape Town set out to reimagine its digital workplace. The goal was bold: build an integrated, user-centric environment that supports mobility, improves collaboration, strengthens governance, and enhances service delivery for a metro of nearly five million residents.

The City's productivity ecosystem was modernised at scale:
31,000+ mailboxes migrated
20.6 billion messages processed
90+ TB of data moved to a modern cloud foundation
Legacy systems replaced with an integrated, secure, cloud-enabled platform

The result was a more connected, agile, and resilient digital workplace – one that enables the City's staff and contractors to work from anywhere and supports faster, more reliable service delivery.

Why this project mattered

This transformation was part of the City's long-term digital strategy, emphasizing user-centric design, operational resilience, strong governance, and readiness for future IT capabilities. As stakeholders note throughout these mini-interviews, Project Blast Off wasn't merely a technology upgrade: it represented a shift in how the City's end-users communicate, collaborate, and work to serve local citizens.
