How good are the 2022 Rieslings?

After the great South Australian 2021 vintage, it was hard to imagine a better follow up. As it turns out, 2021 and 2022 are a good looking pair of vintages: both cool and long, where the decent yields were largely unaffected by disease pressure. In Clare Valley, the 2022 vintage has been widely compared to the great 2002 season. The 2022’s across the board have excellent acidity, generous fruit and fine structure - a formidable trio of attributes. While seasonal comparisons are hard to draw given the myriad of differences the vineyards weather year on year, there is plenty to be gained for our understanding of the resultant wines by looking at them this way. In this video, I explore six diverse and excellent styles from both Eden Valley and Clare Valley. Riesling, whether we look at these super new world iterations, or the great GG’s of Germany, remains the greatest value premium wine on the planet.
