Olympians joined San Miguel rowers on the Hudson River to christen and celebrate two new boats, thanks to a generous grant from the 'A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund'.

Special thanks to Arshay Cooper, who is committed to expanding the sport of rowing to under-resourced communities. Growing up on Chicago’s West Side in the 1990s, Arshay Cooper escaped the violence in his neighborhood through rowing. His memoir, A Most Beautiful Thing, chronicles his experience rowing crew with teammates from rival neighborhoods and gangs on the first all-Black high school rowing team in the United States. Arshay describes how he and his teammates experienced racism and discrimination in communities around the boathouses the team traveled to, and how rowing ultimately transformed his life.

Last summer, A Most Beautiful Thing was released as a feature-length documentary, narrated by Common and executive produced by Common, Grant Hill, Dwayne Wade, and producer 9th Wonder.

A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund, under the umbrella of the George Pocock Rowing Foundation, supports the work of Arshay Cooper. San Miguel Academy is most grateful for their work!
