General Sir Mike Jackson spent more than four decades in the army, rising to become Chief of the General Staff. Making difficult command decisions and following orders became second nature, but an unlikely incident in Kosovo in 1999 led him to question his superior's orders. On two occasions in just a few days, Mike Jackson was prepared to walk away from his job, so strong were his convictions that what he was being asked to do was wrong. He didn't have to go but did enough to ensure his viewpoint from the sharp end, on the ground, was made known to those in charge.
