Margaret Bonds was an African American composer that drew inspiration from jazz, spiritual, and gospel practices in her works. The Spiritual Suite is comprised of three fantasies, each inspired by a spiritual. The Bells, the middle movement, is inspired by “Peter, Go Ring ‘dem Bells” in which the singer rejoices because she “heard from heaven today!” The entire suite can be thought of as a journey from restoration to celebration to liberation.
