The Seeds of Renewal Project is an effort that began in 2012, as Vermont’s Abenaki petitioned for state recognition, to find and restore traditional seeds the Abenaki have planted for thousands of years. Led by Alnôbaiwi and with guidance of Fred Wiseman, an ethnobotanist and Abenaki historian, more than 50 seed varieties have been recovered by the project. Wiseman and Chief Don Stevens of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk-Abenaki Nation discuss what makes these seeds so sacred, and what it means to hold them.
