Malefemale House, designed by AOA Architects, is a bold architectural statement that challenges traditional notions of home design. Located in Seodaemun-gu, South Korea, this 109 m² residence reinterprets spatial organization by balancing privacy, functionality, and openness.

In modern society, as traditional gender roles evolve, so does the way we shape our living spaces. Malefemale House reflects this shift, creating a dynamic and fluid environment that accommodates both individuality and togetherness. The central staircase serves as more than just a connection between floors—it is the architectural backbone of the house, dividing living spaces in the south from service areas in the north while enabling an 8-character circular movement for seamless transitions.

The kitchen, no longer just a place for cooking, transforms into a café-like social hub where the soon-to-be-married couple can unwind after work. Meanwhile, the second-floor living room and third-floor bedroom mirror each other in size, subtly redefining privacy while maintaining independent spaces with separate toilets. The use of materials further enhances the symbolic design—blue-green marble in the living area represents masculinity, while the red wooden walls in the bedroom embody femininity.

With its striking symmetry, rich material contrasts, and unique interpretation of space, Malefemale House stands as a miniature Baroque cathedral in the form of a modern dwelling. This house is not just a home—it is a reflection of contemporary life and evolving societal values.
