Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) short documentary

Описание к видео Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) short documentary

The Indian Adoption Project, created by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and The Child Welfare League of America, had the goal of assimilating indigenous children into white American culture. During this time it was estimated that 25-35% of all native children were taken from their homes. 90% of them were put into non-indigenous homes. The Indian Child Welfare Act, by prioritizing indigenous culture and families in the case that a child has to be removed by child protective services, aims to prevent this from happening again. However, on November 9th, 2022, ICWA was challenged in an oral hearing. Where a white couple wanted to adopt a Native American child but couldn't due to the protections ICWA provides. This case is known as Haaland vs Brackeen. Documentary short presented by Archie Williams High School's Comcad program. Special thanks to the Falcon Foundation.
