Is the fourth-largest city and a municipality of the Netherlands, capital and most populous city of the province of Utrecht.
It is located in the eastern corner of the Randstad conurbation,
in the very center of mainland Netherlands; it has a population of 361,966 as of December 1, 2021.

Utrecht's ancient city center features many buildings and structures, several dating as far back as the High Middle Ages.
It has been the religious center of the Netherlands since the 8th century.

It was the most important city in the Netherlands until the Dutch Golden Age,
when it was surpassed by Amsterdam as the country's cultural Center and most populous city.

Utrecht is home to Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands,
as well as several other institutions of higher education.

Due to its central position within the country,
it is an important hub for both rail and road transport;
it contains the busiest train station in the Netherlands, Utrecht Central.
Utrecht city has an active cultural life, and in the Netherlands is second only to Amsterdam.
There are several theatres and theatre companies.
The 1941 main city theatre was built by Dudok. In addition to theatres,
there is a large number of cinemas including three Art house cinemas.

In 2017, Utrecht was named as a UNESCO City of Literature.

The Dom van Utrecht (Historic Saint Martin's Cathedral) is a striking Gothic church in the middle of the Dutch city of Utrecht. The church was built from 1254 as a continuation of the Romanesque cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Utrecht and was dedicated to Saint Martin. The church has been Protestant since 1580. The 112.32 meter high Dom Tower is the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the tallest building in Utrecht.

Until the ecclesiastical reorganization in 1559, the Dom was the only cathedral in the Northern Netherlands, an area that roughly coincides with the present-day Netherlands. Until the opening of St. Bavo's Cathedral in Haarlem in 1898, the Dom was the only church in the Netherlands built as a cathedral.

Today the choir, transept and tower of the church building remain. The ship, whose construction was never completed, collapsed in 1674 as a result of natural disasters. As a result, the Dom Tower and the remaining part of the Dom Church became separate from each other. The Dom complex also includes a cloister and the large chapter house (now the auditorium of Utrecht University) where the Union of Utrecht was signed in 1579. The small chapter house of the Dom complex, which was built against the west side of the cloister, was demolished in the nineteenth century.

Explore Utrecht from the water and you will be treated to an entirely different view. See the historic façades of wharf side houses, sculpted tableaux, and all kinds of impressive trees along the canals, some of which are over 200 years old! You can choose between a round-trip with a canal cruise or set out on an exploratory expedition by pedal boat, rowing boat or canoe.
