Lewisham is the central district in the London Borough of Lewisham in South East London. Its borough is huge but Lewisham itself is actually quite small although it is considered a major inner London city centre.

Lewisham market began in 1906 and is still one of just a handful of six-day markets in London. The market was bombed by a V1 rocket landing 100 yards from the Clock Tower killing and injuring dozens of people and demolishing some of the High Street.

In 1977, Riverdale Centre opened with 70 popular stores known today as Lewisham Shopping Centre.

The largest police station in Europe has its home in Lewisham. It opened in 2004 on Lewisham High Street and has an area covering about 10,000m2.

The Pink house on Loampit Vale is a famous dwelling to Lewisham residents and locals given its visual character. The creator and occupant; an active member of the community, passed away recently in June 2017. His real name was Mr Pink. His eccentrically-decorated home combines Victorian architecture with Caribbean-rococo styling. He erected the brick-wall around it with nothing but his bare hands in the name of art.

Lewisham House is the tallest building in the borough forming part of the shopping centre complex and was formerly occupied by Citibank. It was recently bought for 20million with plans to convert it into 230 flats.

University Hospital Lewisham is a National Health Service opened in 1894 and serves the whole Borough. The government tried to close the A+E ward in 2012. However, a strong campaign in Lewisham backed by a march successfully overturned the decision and the High Court ruled it void.

Lewisham is served very well by DLR, mainline trains and buses. Lewisham has never had a tube station but that looks set to change. Lewisham Council and Network Rail are talking about the Bakerloo line being extended up from Elephant & Castle.
