The Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, has stressed the importance of digital skills as the future of work in the ICT space.

Theofelus says young people who lack these skills risk being left behind.

Speaking in an interview with NBC News, Theofelus pointed to Project 1000, an initiative aimed at equipping young Namibians with competitive digital skills to improve employability across multiple industries.

The minister said the project demonstrates how the digital space is reshaping the modern workplace.

Project 1000, the minister noted, goes beyond basic computer or mobile phone usage, with the programme focusing on competitive, market-relevant digital skills that prepare participants for real-world digital employment.

While these positions may not be the highest paying, Theofelus says they are intended to provide financial stability for unemployed youth, regardless of their educational background.

Project 1000 is open to young people under the age of 35.

In addition to Project 1000, the minister said the ministry continues to roll out basic digital literacy training on a monthly basis through its 14 regional offices.

These programmes aim to expose individuals who may never have used computers to essential digital literacy skills.

She noted that unlike Project 1000, these literacy programmes are open to all age groups, including those over 35.
