This old-fashioned yellow cake is light, fluffy, and rich with vanilla flavor, paired with a decadent homemade chocolate frosting. It’s the kind of comfort food that brings back memories of home, love, and togetherness.

Classic Yellow Cake Recipe (from the Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook)

Ingredients:
• 3 cups of cake flour
• 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
•1 teaspoon salt
• ⅔ cup butter or shortening
• 1 ¾ cups sugar
• 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
• 2 eggs
• 1 ¼ cups milk

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
2. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
3. In a large mixing bowl, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy.
4. Mix in vanilla, then add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
5. Alternately add dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.
6. Divide batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
7. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

8. Cool cakes in pans for 10 minutes, then remove to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Classic Southern Chocolate Frosting

Ingredients:
1/3 cup butter at room temperature
1/3 cup milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
2 3/4 cup powdered sugar
pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. With an electric mixer, combine butter, milk and vanilla until light and fluffy.2. Add powdered sugar and cocoa. Mix slowly for one minute, scrape down sides and beat for 1-2 minutes until light and fluffy.
