Video Description: The Swedish Carl Gustaf M4 is an 84 mm man-portable recoilless rifle which is developed and produced by SAAB Bofors Dynamics. It is used to destroy armoured tanks with add-on armour protection, to neutralise landing craft and bunkers, and to clear obstacles. It is also used to engage enemies in buildings. This new anti-tank weapon was introduced at association of United States army in 2014. There are many variants today of which the first variant was introduced in 1948. The first version was one of the many recoilless rifle designs of that era. While similar weapons have generally disappeared from service, the Carl-Gustaf is still produced and in widespread usage today. All previous versions are combat proven were used in various wars, including recent military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, Libyan and Syrian civil wars. According to SAAB Bofors Dynamics the Carl Gustaf M4 has five major improvements over its predecessor. These include compatibility with intelligent sights, an adjustable shoulder rest for better ergonomics, reduced weight, faster reload and integrated shot counter for improved logistics and maintenance.
Ukraine for use against Russia is the Carl gustav M2. Canada provides 100 Carl Gustavs and 2,000 rounds of 84-millimeter ammunition. Australia has committed to providing Ukraine with unnamed anti-armour weapons and has Carl Gustavs in its arsenal. The M2 variant is a recoiless 1130 mm in overall length having an effective range of 150 m against moving tanks and 700 m against stationary targets. The M2 has an armour penetration of up to 400 mm of rolled homogenous armour.
Although it's difficult to employ on a moving target, the 84mm Carl Gustaf M2 may be quite effective at short ranges. The M-2 can't defeat the armour of a typical modern battle tank. However, thin-skinned support vehicles like fuel tankers, tank transporters, and lighter personnel carriers are vulnerable to M-2. Targeting those vehicles, as Ukrainian forces have demonstrated, can quickly derail an enemy assault.
