This week we feature Dr. Ayo Ajayi, the immediate former Director of the Africa Team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where he led the policy, advocacy and government relations portfolios across the continent as well as the foundation’s offices in Ethiopia, South Africa and Nigeria.

Before joining the Gates Foundation, Dr. Ajayi spent six years as Vice President for International Development at PATH, where he led strategy development and implementation for all PATH country programs. He was previously Regional Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at the Population Council, Africa Regional Vice President for Pathfinder International, and government health officer in Nigeria. In addition to teaching experience at Boston University School of Public Health, Dr. Ajayi has frequently served as technical advisor and program evaluator for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the World Health Organization, and other United Nations agencies and private foundations. He is a founding board member of the Burkitt’s Lymphoma Fund for Africa and serves on the boards of Ibis Reproductive Health and the Positive Action for Children Fund.

Dr. Ajayi earned his MD from the University of Ibadan Medical School in Nigeria. He received an MPH with an emphasis on health systems and a distinguished alumnus award from Boston University School of Public Health and completed a post-graduate certificate program in family planning impact evaluation at the London University School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
