मध्यप्रदेश के जबलपुर में बहती नर्मदा नदी के किनारे स्थित भेड़ाघाट, अपने संगमरमर के पहाड़ों और शांत बहते जल के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। लेकिन रात की सफ़ेद चाँदनी में वही पहाड़ डर पैदा करने लगते हैं। स्थानीय लोग कहते हैं कि जब पहाड़ चुप हो जाएँ, और नदी तेज़ बहने लगे… तो वहाँ किसी की फुसफुसाहट सुनाई देती है — जो ज़िंदा लोगों के नाम लेकर बुलाती है।
अर्जुन और सिया — कॉलेज के प्रेमी थे। सिया का जन्मदिन था, और अर्जुन उसे एक यादगार सरप्राइज़ देना चाहता था। उसने सोचा, दिन के मुकाबले रात की नाव यात्रा ज़्यादा रोमांचक होगी। ठंडी हवा, चाँद का रोशनी से भरा आसमान और नर्मदा की हल्की लहरें — रोमांस और शांति का अद्भुत अनुभव।
"अर… अर्जुन, ये ठीक तो है ना? रात में नाव… सभी कहते हैं यहाँ रात को—"
सिया की आवाज़ चिंता से काँप रही थी।
अर्जुन मुस्कुराया — “तुम मेरी बाहों में हो, कोई डर नहीं।”
नाव धीरे-धीरे पानी को चीरती आगे बढ़ने लगी। दोनों सफ़ेद पहाड़ों के बीच थे — जहाँ चाँदनी पड़ते ही चट्टानें चमकने लगती थीं। जैसे किसी जादुई दुनिया में पहुँच गए हों। सिया का मन धीरे-धीरे शांत होने लगा।

“कितनी खूबसूरत जगह है…” उसने आसमान की ओर देखते हुए कहा।
अर्जुन ने उसका हाथ थामते हुए कहा — “यह पल हमेशा याद रहेगा, मैं वादा करता हूँ।”

पर कुछ ही क्षण बाद हवा की दिशा अचानक बदल गई। ठंडी हवा अब तेज़ होते-होते बिलकुल सर्द बवंडर जैसी हो गई। नदी की लहरें उछलने लगीं — जैसे किसी अदृश्य शक्ति ने उन्हें धक्का दिया हो।

और तभी…
पहाड़ों से एक फुसफुसाहट गूँज उठी —
“मत रुको…”

आवाज़ इतनी धीमी थी… पर दिल में घुसकर सुनाई दे रही थी।
सिया ने काँपते हुए पूछा — “तुमने सुना…?”
अर्जुन ने हँसी में टालने की कोशिश की, “शायद हवा होगी…”

पर फिर दूसरी बार —
“मत रुको… वरना तुम भी लौटकर नहीं आओगे…”

अब आवाज़ और साफ़ थी। सिया ने अर्जुन का हाथ कसकर पकड़ लिया।
“अर्जुन, मुझे वापस चलो… अभी!”

अर्जुन ने नाव मोड़नी चाही… पर नाव जैसे अपनी marzi से आगे बढ़ रही थी — तेज़, बहुत तेज़।

नदी की गहराइयों से बुलबुले उठने लगे।
नाव के नीचे कुछ भारी चीज़ें चल रही थीं — जैसे कई हाथ… नाव को खींच रहे हों।

सिया चिल्लाई — “कोई है? हमें बाहर निकालो!”
पास कोई नाव नहीं, कोई प्रकाश नहीं… सिर्फ अँधेरा, पहाड़ और नदी की गर्जना।

पहाड़ों पर अब नक्काशी उभरती दिख रही थी — जैसे संगमरमर की सफेद चट्टानों में अनगिनत चेहरे कैद हों…
सबकी आँखें अर्जुन और सिया को घूर रही थीं।
