'The Da Vinci Code' Acting Class Scene Filmed at Babcock Studios

One of the necessary but tricky tasks for both screenwriters and actors is delivering exposition—the part of the story where the plot, character backgrounds, and essential story details are revealed to the audience. Whether through narration or dialogue, exposition often requires an actor to explain complex story elements to another character.

Exposition can often be very difficult to make compelling as it can sound as if the actor is simply listing facts or reading a Wikipedia page aloud. The reason? Explaining doesn't dial one into natural emotion, so the actor has to create their own subtext and up the emotional stakes to not have the audience tune out or nod off.

In 'The Da Vinci Code,' massive segments are dedicated to explaining symbols, history, and religion to the audience as the character of Robert Langon, played here by Paul Pirkle, walks through various cities constantly explaining these things to Sophie, portrayed by Megan Combs.

Both actors here have what we call word-soup, and the challenge was to make the exposition and explanation urgent, exciting, and emotional to both characters. In the penultimate scene of the movie, Langdon reveals the ultimate truth of the holy grail and the descendants of Christ. It's pretty big stuff to get excited about, and I believe Paul and Megan bring the right amount of awe and urgency to the expositional climax.
