Cherrapunji City History

Cherrapunji, also spelled Sohra, is a town in the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, northeastern India. Known for its exceptional rainfall, it was once the wettest place on Earth and still receives some of the highest annual rainfall totals globally.

Ancient and Pre-Colonial Period

Khasi Hills Region: Cherrapunji is located in the traditional lands of the Khasi people, one of the major tribal groups in Meghalaya. The Khasis have a rich oral tradition and were organized in clan-based societies.

The town of Sohra (as locals call it) was an important center for the Khasi tribal kingdom. It was the seat of the Syiem (chieftain) of the Khasi Hills.

Colonial Period

British Arrival (1830s): The British entered the Khasi Hills during their expansion in northeast India. After a brief conflict with Khasi chieftain Tirot Sing, Cherrapunji was occupied by British forces.

Administrative Hub: The British established Cherrapunji as the first capital of the Assam Province’s Khasi and Jaintia Hills due to its strategic location and elevation.

However, due to the excessive rainfall and associated challenges, the British moved the administrative headquarters to Shillong in the 1860s.

British records began documenting Cherrapunji's rainfall in the 19th century, bringing international attention to its extraordinary climate.

Post-Independence Era

Cherrapunji remained a small but notable town in independent India.

The area has become a tourist attraction due to its climate, scenic landscapes, waterfalls, limestone caves, and the living root bridges crafted by the Khasi people.

Today, it is part of the state of Meghalaya, which was carved out of Assam in 1972.

The Khasi population continues to maintain their matrilineal culture, traditional practices, and environmental stewardship.

The living root bridges are a symbol of sustainable architecture and are internationally recognized.

Environmental degradation and deforestation have impacted the region's ecosystem in recent decades, leading to government and local efforts to preserve its natural heritage.
