This was a legendary hike on my wish list, and it lived up to my expectations in every way. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand's North Island is a 1-way 19.4km hike across Mt Tongariro National Park, taking in South and Red Craters, along with the Emerald and Blue Lakes. It is 9km of ascent, and 10.5km of descent.

The hike will take between 5-8 hours to complete, and should be planned well in advance with the help of shuttle services, as parking is very restricted. It is challenging but not overly difficult if you are used to long hikes. About 1000m of elevation gain, but a very long descent for the last part of the hike.

The highlight is undoubtedly km 5 - km 10, the volcanic crossing. This section is truly awesome, and some of the best scenery I have ever hiked. If I am honest, the last 10km is a bit of a downhill slog which is not particularly enjoyable, but it is necessary to enjoy the amazing crossing at the top!

Do your research, do your planning. Be prepared for a fair few fellow hikers, and enjoy this one - it is a really really great hike!

Best in the world? I think PR1 in Madeira could equally argue that title!
