Okay, some actual tips for hired hands:
They can carry an item into the next level for you.
They count as much as a damsel if you sacrifice them alive. Their corpse is just as good as a damsel corpse, too.
They'll kill monsters that might damage you. They'll probably also kill you.
They can lure a shopkeeper away I guess?
Seriously, just murder them the first chance you get.
