🔍 Eligibility Criteria for SILK Laser Surgery:

1. Must be 18 years or older.
2. Stable specs power for the past 6 months.
3. For the ladies: Not pregnant or breastfeeding.


🚫 SILK's Limitations:

1. Hyperopia (Farsightedness):
• What is it? Hyperopia, commonly known as farsightedness, is a refractive error where distant objects can be seen more clearly than nearby objects. This happens when the light entering the eye is focused behind the retina.
• Why can't SILK correct it? While SILK has made strides in treating various eye conditions, it hasn't been optimized or proven effective for hyperopia correction.

2. Limited Correction Range:
• What does it mean? Even though Johnson & Johnson claims that SILK can correct specs power up to -12 for myopia and astigmatism up to -6, many refractive surgeons believe the safe correction range is narrower.
• Why the discrepancy? The broader the correction range, the higher the potential risks. Many surgeons prioritize patient safety and prefer to stay within a conservative correction range, typically -8 in myopia and -3 in astigmatism.

3. Keratoconus:
• What is it? Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition where the cornea, which is typically round, thins out and bulges into a cone-like shape. This distortion leads to blurred vision.
• Why isn't SILK suitable? The structural changes in a keratoconus-affected cornea make it challenging for SILK to achieve the desired results. Moreover, the procedure might exacerbate the condition.

4. Presbyopia:
• What is it? Presbyopia is an age-related condition where the eye's lens loses its flexibility, making it hard to focus on close objects.
• Why can't SILK correct it? SILK primarily targets the cornea, while presbyopia is a lens issue. Current laser procedures, including SILK, aren't designed to treat lens flexibility problems.

5. Eye Dryness:
• What does it mean? Post-surgery, many patients experience dry eyes, a condition where the eyes don't produce enough tears or the right quality of tears.
• Why does SILK cause it? All laser procedures, including SILK, can disrupt the cornea's nerve endings, affecting tear production. While SILK might cause less dryness compared to other procedures, it's still a potential side effect.

6. Correction Limitations:
• What does it mean? SILK, like all medical procedures, has its boundaries. It might not be suitable for all types of vision corrections or for patients with certain eye conditions.
• Why the limitations? Every eye is unique, and while SILK is advanced, it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Some eyes might require a different approach or combination of treatments.
