The Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) partnered with the Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU) to provide wi-fi access and core network upgrades to the Infectious Diseases Institute located at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. Engineers from the the two groups and the network staff of the College of Health Sciences, Info Services, came together to implement the changes. IDI serves not only as a research center in eastern Africa but also as a clinic for treatment and prevention of infectious diseases.

NSRC's partnership with RENU and the UbuntuNet Alliance seeks to improve networks and the availability of highly trained network engineers in the domain of research and education. Using engineering staff of neighboring countries further promotes the adoption of new member institutions. In this way Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Uganda commonly cooperate in network engineering projects and residential workshops.
