"I'm really excited to be doing this play. I have been wanting to work with Kenny Leon. And this play is a play that I actually didn't read in high school. I ran into Kenny and he was telling me he was going to do this, and I was like, 'Our Town', oh my god, that sounds so exciting. I happened to be reading the Ann Patchett book at the time. I was like, oh wow, this is so funny. And this cast, I mean, is just like, magical. It's thrilling to be a part of."

"This play has been done obviously, many times. There's a reason for it. These themes are so relevant today as they were 100 years ago."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Katie Holmes, actor:
"It is an exciting time in America. And I think, again, seeing people, 28 people on stage caring about each other -- that's powerful. That's what we need more of: how different things affect different people and how we need to take care of one another."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Kenny Leon, director:
"Yeha, yeah.
After I did 'Purlie Victorious' on Broadway last year, I talked to Jeffrey Richards, the producer, and said, It's important that we open this play before the November elections. And so it's going to open in September and run through January, Dr. (Martin Luther) King's birthday weekend. So I think it's a perfect time to bring attention to Thornton Wilder's timeless play."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Kenny Leon, director:
"I realized audiences today, no matter what the play says, they're looking at it from their seats in 2024. I don't do museum pieces. And I've won one Tony Award for directing, but I won four Tony Awards for revivals of plays. And I'm most proud of those revivals because it's like you take something that's old and you make it relevant for audiences today. In the same way that I'm really excited about this production of 'Our Town,' I want to see how it speaks to us now, speaks to our politics, speaks to our love for each other, speaks for our tolerance of difference. What better play would a director want to do?"

"It's been the dream of my life to do this show anytime, anywhere. So, to get to do it here on Broadway during this very intense time is extra special. It's about community and about coming together and about love and about time and remembering we don't get that much of it. So, yeah, I am aware of that. And I think it's a perfect time."

STORYLINE:
Jim Parsons, Katie Holmes and Zoey Deutch are bringing the classic Thornton Wilder play, "Our Town," back to Broadway.
The Pulitzer Prize winning piece by Wilder features small town locals whose lives are narrated by a stage manager (Parsons). The three-act play follows main characters - Emily Webb (Deutch) and George Gibbs (Ephraim Sykes) -- through stages of early life, marriage, births and deaths. Holmes plays the role of Mrs. Webb.
The cast said it was important that a message about caring for your neighbor be on Broadway as many Americans are focused on politics ahead of the upcoming 2024 Presidential election.
